‘Flip’ for Change

- haider@mymobile.co.in

It’s a season of quirky, interesting and intriguing design concepts in smartphones. We have, till now, come across many such designs which is somewhat very different from

the conventional designs that we used to have. Continuing this flavor of the season, the Taiwanese major, Asus, has introduced its new flagship premium smartphone called the Asus 6Z with a design that will leave many spellbound. Though not very challenging design wise but, still it has some unique and cool propositions to make it stand out among the crowd of smartphones in that segment or price point. We too were lucky to get hold of this new interesting smartphone in Midnight Black so that we can review it for our esteemed readers.

Design

The most highlighting factor these days has become the design of smartphones and especially the back design. Similarly, Asus 6Z is also designed in similar way to get hold of your attention in flash. The one very noticeable part of its design is the Flip cameras it has. Serving both the purposes of being rear and selfie lens, it is mounted on the back of the phone situated in a cavity. Every time you want to use the front lens, it comes out of that cavity which can be controlled as well.there are chances that dirt might fill into the cavity, so keep it safe and protected.the motorized mechanism works effortlessly to bring it forth and back to its normal position.

You can do it manually too but, that’s too risky to try unless money isn’t a problem for you. The ‘Flip Camera’ has two lenses accompanied by an LED flash for help in between. The back panel also has the fingerprint scanner, small in radius, yet fast and efficient. There’s a branding of Asus as well on the back. It has gloss, shine but, interestingly not slippery either. It doesn’t get fingerprint imprints as well. The form factor makes it fit easily into palm and can be used single handedly. The curves at the edges make it even more comfortable to hold and use. The phone is light in weight as compared on Oneplus

7 Pro and Oppo Reno 10x Zoom. The front is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6 having edge to edge display with minimum bezels. The earpiece lies just above the display. The bottom of Asus 6Z has 3.5mm jack which isn’t there in Oneplus 7 Pro, USB Type-c charging port and speaker grille. The SIM tray is placed on the left panel while the right holds the volume keys, power button and a very unique addition, a dedicated Smart Key which can be used for various purposes. Overall, the new Asus 6Z has introduced ‘Flip Camera’ concept which isn’t new. There have been such designs in the past too if I’m not mistaken. The smartphone is sturdy and smart at the same time. The curves at the back are no miss. Asus could have tried its hand with the in-display fingerprint scanner with 6Z.

Display

The Asus 6Z has quite an

attractive and pleasant display to have; bright, vivid and punchy with very good colour reproduction. The display of Asus 6Z adds advantage to its charm with HDR10.

The 6.4 inches Nanoedge FHD+ screen has a 92 per cent of screen to body ratio. With 1080x2340 pixels resolution, Asus 6Z remains equally bright and crisp under the sun.the screen is protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 6 for fall and smudges. The big screen is ideal for watching and game playing. Online video consumption is also good on such gorgeous screen. The content looks lively due to the crispiness it has. The display of Asus 6Z will definitely make you fall in love with it.

Platform

Asus has incorporated the latest, fast and efficient chipset, Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. We have seen the same processor in Oneplus 7 Pro and Oppo Reno 10x Zoom. The octacore chipset is successfully running all these premium smartphones with élan. There’s no lag or heaviness encountered till now. The 7nm chipset with Adreno 640 is just good enough for gaming and multi-tasking. Asus 6Z comes equipped with 8GB RAM, what we got review, which makes it a good contender in this segment. Oneplus 7 Pro and Oppo Reno 10x Zoom have the same

RAM configuration too and I have used them before this phone and can easily say tha Asus 6Z is no less than these two smartphones. It is equally fast, snappy and efficient when it comes to gaming and multi-tasking. you can enjoy heavy and graphic intensive games. There’s no one stopping you either to play PUBG Mobile.the 256GB ROM is ample amount of storage that you could ask for from a flagship and premium smartphone. Yet, it comes with expandable storage option upto 1TB unlike Oneplus 7 Pro.

The Asus 6Z runs on Android Pie 9.0 with ZENUI 6. The operation is as smooth as it can get. The extra layer of their own skin adds some fun and advantages of the 6Z. The ZENUI is more efficient, smooth and immersive this time; it’s like using a pure stock Android smartphone. It’s very clean, easy to use, navigate and run the tasks with ease. The image processing is smooth as well. The camera and battery performances were good till the time I was using it. The ZENUI is as intuitive and smooth as Oxygenos on the Oneplus 7 Pro and much better than the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom. There are very few pre-installed apps on the phone so you get it hell lot space to fill. Overall, Asus has made significant improvements in its ZENUI with 6Z, and coupled with Pie and QS 855 octa-core it becomes a strong deciding factor for the buyers at this price point.

Cameras

Asus 6Z has a multi-purpose camera. It uses the same setup for both front and back. The ‘Flip Camera’ smartphone uses Sony IMX586 sensor 48MP main lens and a 13MP telephoto lens with f/1.8 and

f/2.4 respectively.it’s been a trend of using 48MP lens but the software optimization of it remains the key. Asus has done a great job with it with 6Z. The picture qualities were intact. Asus 6Z does not miss on the detailing at all; be it night or low light photography or normal modes. The colour saturation is good and the exposure too is just close to perfection. There are numerous modes available such as

time lapse, slow motion, panorama, motion tracking, night and pro mode. The motion tracking is an interesting option to try where it follows the subject wherever it goes but, it’s not available for the front lens. It can shoot videos too at 4K using this new feature. The Super Night Mode enhances the picture qualities taken at night like Nightscape mode on Oneplus 7 Pro. The Panorama shots are also another interesting feature of Asus 6Z to try. You can control the movement of the motorized camera module as you like. You don’t need to change your own original position for panorama. You can either do it manually or it moves automatically. with HDR+ support and equally ambient display, the pictures look stunning on Asus 6Z.

Interestingly, the Portrait shots are very good which can clearly make you stand among the crowd. The edge detection is perfect and does not cut the ear or hair as in the most of other smartphones at this price point would do. The configuration of both selfie and rear remains the same with minor adjustments in hardware and software. If you want to use Face Unlock, the selfie lens rises up from the cavity which is fast and effective. To summarize, the Asus 6Z’s ‘Flip Camera’ has lots of potentials. The image qualities are noteworthy and share-worthy on social platforms. In a world full of tri-camera setup Asus 6Z stands tall with immaculate image processing capabilities with just two lenses in total.

Battery

When the phone is big, display is huge and immersive, where the camera flips each time you want to use face unlock or to click a selfie then that smartphone requires a huge battery to sustain all these and Asus 6Z does not disappoint either. It comes with a mammoth 5,000mah battery, something which gives an advantage to it over it competitors like Oneplus 7 Pro and Oppo Reno 10x Zoom. Accompanied by a fast charger of 18W, the 6Z fills up fast. It can also be used for reverse charging. The 5,000mah battery lets you enjoy unlimited video, gaming, net surfing, etc. for a day at least. In normal usage it can lasts easily for 2 days. The processor helps it go even further without draining quickly. A flagship smartphone needs a flagship battery and Asus 6Z has it. Forget about casual and interval charging with Asus 6Z. The smartphone does not generate heat while charging but in summers you might encounter some.

Conclusion

Asus flips a new challenge for the market and buyers with 6Z. With immersive display, mammoth battery, clean and fast performances Asus 6Z can easily compete with Oneplus 7 Pro and Oppo Reno 10x Zoom. The dual lens ‘Flip Camera’ setup opens new dimensions for users with more fun without missing on the detailing. At Rs 39,999 for the 8GB/256GB variant, Asus 6Z offers much more and opens new dimensions with its ‘Flip’. ■
