A Feature-rich Budget Phone

- ramesh@mymobile.co.in

Following the launch of Cool 3 in February this year, Coolpad has now come up with its successor known as the Cool 3 Plus, which is a budgetcentric smartphone, similar to its predecessor, and flaunts a dewdrop display. It comes in two RAM-ROM variants2gb+16gb and 3GB+32GB. Let’s find out how it fares on different parameters.

Design

The Coolpad Cool 3 Plus features a 5.71-inch dewdrop notch display, earpiece, frontfacing camera and on-screen button. It has rhin bezels on the sides and on top, but has a slim chin, which is suitable at this price. It sports the power button and volume rockers on the right, SIM card slot, hybrid SIM support on the left, 3.5mm audio jack on the top, microusb port, speaker grill on the bottom. On back, the smartphone has a plastic build with a gradient finish which looks like a glossy finish. It has a 13MP rear camera with LED flash and fingerprint scanner. The back panel has curved edges which give good grip in hand. It measures 145.7 x 70.9 x 8.2 mm and weighs 135g, which makes it easy to use in a single hand. The build quality of the smartphone is good.

Display

The smartphone comes with a 5.71-inch HD+ display with a screen resolution of 1520 x 720 pixels. It comes with an auto-brightness sensor, night light mode which works well. It does not come with display protection. The display produces good colours and viewing angle in indoor conditions is bright. You need to enable full brightness in sunlight.

Platform

The Cool 3 Plus is powered by quad-core Mediatek Helio A22 12nm processor with

IMG Powervr Ge-class GPU. Although it’s expanded up to 128GB, out of 32GB around 21GB is available for the user. The smartphone runs on Android 9.0 Pie. Games like Temple Run and Subway Surfers work smoothly whereas it’s not good for graphic-intensive games. Performancewise, it’s quite decent but only in normal use cases. On the connectivity front, it includes 4G VOLTE, Bluetooth, Wifi, GPS, GLONASS, OTG support. The call quality – audio as well as video – is good and the audio output from the speaker is loud and clear.

Cameras

For photography purposes, the smartphone has a 13MP rear camera with an LED flash and 8MP front-facing camera. Both front and rear cameras can record 1080p videos. The camera app mode includes Beauty Face, Portrait, GIF, Time Lapse, Watermark, Beauty Video and Bokeh.

Both the cameras capture good images under good lighting, but definitely not in

Battery

The Coolpad Cool 3 Plus gets its fuel from a 3,000mah battery which comes with 5V 1A charger that takes over 2 hours to charge fully. Interestingly, there is support for 2A charger which takes 30min less time compared to the box charger. The battery backup is quite decent in normal use which includes browsing e-mail and social media apps.

Conclusion

The smartphone has emerged as a winner on all the parameters, except the processor which lags while multitasking especially when you play a feature-intensive game and download a heavy file. It performed well in the camera department but needs a lot more to be improved as everyone is quite conscious about this feature. If we talk about the battery, it’s at par with many other devices in its price (Rs 6,499) segment. Overall, you can’t ignore it! ■
