Transsion investing big time in India with plans to set up an industrial park

-

China-based Transsion Holdings is reportedly planning to set up an industrial park in India where it may manufacture mobile accessories and consumer durables, while it also plans to begin research and development in India. The Chinese group which counts Tecno, Infinix and Itel as sub-brands that focus on smartphones and feature phones, is expanding exports of mobile phones to African markets and planning to set up surface mount technology (SMT) manufacturing lines, thus moving beyond

assembly of mobile phones in India. “We’re investing big time in India, with plans to set up an industrial park and do R&D here. We want to make in India and export to Africa, we have started with small numbers but we will expand it,” said Arijeet Talapatra, CEO, Transsion India.

Marco Maa, COO, Transsion India, said, “The industrial park is more for creating a supply chain ecosystem and not only in the mobile phone, but also other categories (consumer durables and mobile phone accessories).” The company is looking at 40-50 acres and is talking to different states, where mobile phone accessories under the Oraimo brand will be made. Its yet-to-belaunched consumer durables brand may also be made here, but the company has not taken a decision on this yet. “We will have to expand our capacities – from 20 million feature phones and 10 million smartphones – if we want to cater to export markets,” Talapatra added, backing the plans for investing in the industrial park, but without revealing the investment figures planned.n
