A Mix and Miss Smartphone

OPPO has added one new member to its Reno family which falls under the premium segment in the Indian smartphone market. Being not so old the Reno series of the OPPO has made quite a successful impact in the market and the new launch of OPPO Reno 4 Pro is set to carry on the legacy with updated features to thrill the customers which we will unravel in this review of ours. The company has not announced the 5G feature in the new Reno4 yet due to the country’s issue of the 5G spectrum and its availability to the public.

Design

The new OPPO Reno 4 is one of the stunning phones in terms of looks as the phone is very sleek with matte body finish and curved glass body. The new Oppo Reno 4 Pro is one of the lightest phones to hold and operate plus it fits the palm quite comfortably. We enjoyed using the phone as it did not exert any strain on our hands while using it for a longer period of time. The curved screen on the front looks completely bezel-less with just some chins at the bottom. There is a punch hole on the display carrying the selfie sensor. The fingerprint sensor is also on display which when tested stood out to be very quick and accurate. At the rear side of the phone lies the quad-camera sensors which are slightly bulged outwards but they are placed beautifully in the frame followed by an LED flash.

The placements of the keys are in the same fashion as we see in all the phones from OPPO where the power button is on the right side and the company has added a green accent to the power button whereas the volume rockers lie towards the left side of the phone. The placement of the SIM tray is on the top side of the phone and the company has added extra slot within the SIM tray for microsd card which I think is quite an impressive move. At the bottom side of the phone lies the USB-C port as well as 3.5mm headphone jack and the primary mic and a loudspeaker.

Display

The Reno4 Pro is equipped with a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a 1080x2400 resolution in a 20:9 ratio. It supports a 90Hz refresh rate, while the touch sampling goes all the way up to 180Hz. The feel of the display is super smooth while performing any task.

The colour production on the screen is of top-notch quality and the screen offers immersive viewing experience. The aspect 20:9 aspect ratio offers wide viewing angles. One of the features of the display to look out for is its 1100 nits brightness which makes the screen visible quite comfortably under bright sunlight. The Reno4 Pro comes with two Bright and Gentle colour presets. There’s an extra Cool-to-warm switch in either mode providing stepless modifications.

Platform

The Reno4 Pro runs Coloros 7.2 on top of Android 10. The Color OS 7.2 is the updated version of 7.1 with some minor changes. You get to choose between the simplified approach with all the apps arranged on the home screens or a standard app drawer.

The banned apps in India are also removed in the latest OS. Color OS has a gesture for quick switch between the last two apps if you swipe in for Back but hold for a brief instant. That’s optional and it can work in addition to the default side swiping on the bottom of the screen.

The Reno4 Pro has Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G chipset with eight cores where two cores are clocked at 2.3 GHZ Kryo 465 Gold and 6

cores are clocked at 1.8 GHZ Kryo 465 Silver. The processor of the phone is very quick and does not show any lags while multi-tasking or dealing with heavy applications. But when looked from the competition point of view the chipset seems to fall short when compared to other phones of similar price range like the Vivo X50 series features 730G chipset. The graphics level of the Reno4 pro is also quite good as the Adreno

618 delivers quite impressive graphic output. Every game ran in their top-notch graphic quality and the 90Hz refresh rate further extends the gaming experience. The RAM size of Reno4 Pro is of 8GB which assists the processor quite well to take on tasks.

The internal storage on the other hand is of 128GB and can be further expanded with the help of a microsd card. The company could have opted for a more updated processor to make the phone more successful because with 720G chipset the phone will surely have a tough time in the competition.

OPPO has always amused the users with its powerful camera power and the new Oppo Reno4 has also the all ammunition in its camera holster. OPPO Reno4 has a quad-camera setup where the primary camera is a 48MP Quad Bayer Sony IMX586 sensor with an f/1.7 aperture. The second sensor is 8MP ultra-wide sensor with an aperture of f/2.4. The third sensor is a 2MP macro lens with an aperture of f/2.4 and the fourth sensor is a depth sensor of 2MP with an aperture of f/2.4. The images captured at daylight were perfectly balanced in terms of color, exposure, and detailing. There’s no telephoto cam on the Reno 4 Pro, but you do get 2x and 5x zoom positions in the viewfinder. The ultrawide lens does quite a decent job as well by keeping all the details intact. The images captured at night were very good as the camera sensors kept the noise effect at bay. The Night mode brightens up the shadows for you, and that it does well. Highlights do get better developed too. Night mode shots come with some fine detail loss and extra heavy sharpening to try and compensate for it, but also less noise. The portrait mode functions very well on the Reno4 Pro. Isolation of the subject is professional, no clipped ears are present and the boundary along the clothes is also made without glitches, although our normally troublesome wooden wall cladding does not pose problems. OPPO Reno4 Pro has a 32MP selfie camera sensor and the selfies which we captured were very good and there were no additional unwanted effects. Selfie portraits come with good subject separation and pleasing, natural-looking blur. The low lighting capture capability of the selfie sensor is quite good as well as the selfies at night were quite detailed as well.

The Reno4 Pro records video up to 4K resolution at 30fps with its main cam and 1080p at 30fps with its ultrawide module. 2x and 5x zoom levels are available too, despite lack of dedicated telephoto camera.

Battery

OPPO Reno4 Pro comes with 4,000mah battery power. While testing the longevity of the battery power we found out that the battery is very much capable of lasting a whole day. We played games and watched movies for hours still we were able to get through a day with some percent of charge left at the end of the day. Oppo Reno4 Pro has 65W SUPERVOOC 2.0 charging capability and it charges the phone from 0-100% within 35-40 minutes which is really fast and amazing.

Conclusion

Oppo Reno4 Pro is a sleek yet stylish smartphone with matte back that makes it quite comfortable for gripping. The plastic used is out of imagination when we already have Vivo X50 with gorgeous glass metal design. The crisp and vivid display adds to the beauty of Reno4 Pro with in-demand 90Hz refresh rate. The quad-camera at the rear has many possibilities to explore. A mid-range processor wasn’t expected when the smartphone is priced at Rs 34,999. The battery is sufficient for the day whereas the 65W charger is an awesome experience. Overall, OPPO Reno4 Pro is a mix and miss of features but, has to deal with Vivo X50 in the market that offers a better deal. ■
