Meity gets mightier with two technocrats as ministers
In a major Cabinet reshuffle in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, Ashwini Vaishnav was appointed as the Union Minister and Rajeev Chandrasekhar as Minister of State (MOS) in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity). Vaishnav will also serve as the Union Railway Minister and Chandrasekhar was also assigned additional charge in Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
Both the ministers have a distinguished past and we hope their new vision for the country will take the electronics industry to the next level. While Ashwini Vaishnav is a former IAS officer who holds degrees from IIT Kanpur and Wharton Business School, Rajeev Chandrasekhar is an engineering graduate from Manipal Institute of Technology and he did his MS in Computer Science from Illinois Institute of Technology. Both have served the industry at leading positions with their impeccable track record.
In order to position India as a global hub for Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM), Meity has designed and implemented several schemes including the PLI, mscheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS) and Modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters Scheme (EMC 2.0). Meity recently also launched a scheme aimed at setting up / expansion of existing Semiconductor wafer / device fabrication (FAB) facilities in India or acquisition of Semiconductor FABS outside India. Both the ministers will be expected to hit the ground running to further strengthen these initiatives with their expertise in technology.n
