SUSE has announced the appointment of Vishal Ghariwala as its new chief technology officer (CTO) for the AsiaPacific and Japan (APJ), and Greater China regions. He brings to SUSE more than 20 years of experience in cloud computing, cloud native applications and middleware. He has spent half his career working in open source companies.

As the new CTO for APJ and Greater China, he will focus on executive level engagement with key customers and partners and on growing SUSE’s mindshare in the industry. Ghariwala’s vast technical experience will also see him support the global office of the CTO’s objectives in identifying and driving innovative technologies and opportunities in enterprise Linux, Kubernetes management and edge solutions to benefit SUSE and its customers. He will be based in the Singapore office.

He joins SUSE from Red Hat where he was director for cloud native application platforms. Before that, he also held key technical and presales roles in government and tech companies such as Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, ILOG and IBM.

learning and scientific computing. For example, libraries include optimised source C and

Fortran code for linear algebra, random number generation, signal processing and even string processing. Julia also offers parallelism.

Dr Josef Höffner from the Leibniz Institute for Atmospheric Physics in Germany develops high performance LIDAR (light detection and ranging) systems to measure temperature and wind speed in the atmosphere. Now a Julia user, he says: “We perform complex data acquisition and control, with 30 high speed signals, using three Spectrum Instrumentation cards, operating in closed loop operation 24/7. Our laser makes 500 pulses per second and we have to calculate, in real-time, what has to happen next and adjust the controls. For that we have to get the result quickly. That means fast electronics, fast evaluation and then fast control of the hardware. We have found Julia offers a unique combination of speed and dynamic programming, simplifying the software development.”
