Mozilla releases Thunderbird 15 with live chat
The Mozilla Project has released version 15 of its open source Thunderbird e-mail client, and has added instant messaging support along with an updated user interface and security improvements. Previously, developers had added support for instant messaging in Thunderbird 13 and 14, but had decided to disable it by default, to improve it. In Thunderbird 15, the supported chat network includes Facebook Chat, Google Talk, IRC, Twitter and XMPP/Jabber.
One of the unique features of Thunderbird 15 is its full support for the Do Not Track (DNT) header. The DNT privacy setting is a developing standard being used to instruct websites that the browser user doesn't want them to track their online behaviour. The new version also takes care of 12 security vulnerabilities. Of these, five are rated as critical by Mozilla and could be exploited by a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on a victim's system, for instance.
Coming to the looks, developers have added a new menu and toolbar design based on the Australis theme in Thunderbird 15 to make it look more like upcoming versions of Firefox. The Filelink feature, used for sending large attachments, has also been updated and it now supports Canonical's Ubuntu One (U1) cloud storage platform. Thunderbird 15 is available for download for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux users.
