Here comes Nimbro-op, an open source robot!

-

Professor Sven Behnke and his team from the University of Bonn have come up with an open source robot named NimbRo-OP. Professor Behnke's team previously won the Louis Vuitton Cup for 'Best Humanoid' at RoboCup 2012. This model is also based on the same NimbRo model but, this time, NimbRo-OP has got an attractive white head. NimbRo-OP is 95 cm tall (37.4 inches) and weighs 6.6 kg (14.55 pounds).

Nimb Ro-OP is powered by a dual-core AMD E-450 processor along with 2GB of RAM, and a 64 GB solidstate drive. The robot is armed with Wi-Fi, a wide-angled video camera (Logitech C905) and a Robotis CM-730 controller with a 3-axis accelerometer and a 3-axis gyro. The software is released under free and open licences. The GNU/Linux software is based on DARwin-OP. Those who are interested in the project can own a fully assembled robot from University of Bonn at an introductory price of 20,000 Euros plus taxes and shipping. The main reason for open sourcing this project is to enable other groups to use the robot, further improve it and take it to upcoming RoboCup events. The next RoboCup will happen in June 2013 in the Netherlands.
