Joomla is a very popular open source CMS built on a model– view–controller Web application framework, which enables users to build websites and powerful online applications that are easy to use and are extensible. Joomla enables developers to build integrated e-commerce systems, data reporting tools, inventory control systems, custom product catalogues, reservation systems, communication tools, etc.

Other features include user management with nine user groups that have a diverse set of permissions to access, edit, publish and administer; access management with support of multiple protocols and methods such as LDAP, OpenID and Gmail; a media manager to manage media files or folders; a language manager that supports most of the world languages; and UTF-8 encoding, banner management, contact management, polls, search and Web link management to sort sites into categories. Syndication and newsfeed management to syndicate site content prior to allowing users to subscribe to new content via an RSS reader, a menu manager to create menus and menu items, template management to make your site's look uniform and modifiable, an integrated help system to assist users, powerful extensibility with Joomla Extensions, etc, are some of the core features of Joomla.

Joomla is used to build e-commerce and online reservations portals, small business websites, personal or family home pages, community-based portals, school and church websites, corporate Intranets and extranets, corporate or non-profit websites, online magazines, newspapers and publications, government applications, etc. Some of its famous users are MTV Networks’ Quizilla (a social networking platform), Harvard University, Citibank, PlayShakespeare.com, etc.

For installing Joomla 3.x, the requirements are as follows: PHP (Magic Quotes GPC off) 5.4 +, databases such as MySQL (InnoDB support required) 5.1 +, MSSQL 10.50.1600.1+ and PostgreSQL 8.3.18 +; and Web servers such as Apache (with mod_mysql, mod_xml, and mod_zlib) 2.x +, Nginx 1.1 and Microsoft IIS 7.
