India’s First SDN Based Cloud-Controlled Campus-Wide Networking

Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) are a group of institutes of higher education inIndia, focused on core areas of information technology such as Computer Science, Electronics and Communication and their applications in otherdomains.In 2008, the AP Government created Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT), by an act of the Legislature as a full-fledged university, to admit the top 1% of the rural students, into its three campuses of IIIT Nuzvid, Srikakulam and RK Valley. IIIT, Ongole was a later addition to the campuses.

The primary objective of establishing RGUKT was to provide high quality educational opportunities for the aimed rural youth of Andhra Pradesh.

Wi-Fi on Cloud

Pi owned the Supply, Installation & Commissioning of SDN based cloud- controlled campus-wide networking including provisioning of Wi-Fi for the IIIT campuses.

The installation included core switches commissioned at admin buildings, with high switching capacity, which are capable of meeting 100G requirements. The Access Switches are installed at the classrooms, hostels and other buildings across the Campus where the internet and intranet facilities are to be provided. This implementation provided a seamless internet and intranet connectivity to students via Wi-Fi across all buildings in the campus and also across thecampuses.

Extensive due diligence proved Wi-Fi on Cloud tobe the need of the hour and the most suitable solution for IIIT. This SDN based cloud- controlled campuswide network including Wi-Fi provisioning from Pi, is the first of its kind implementation in India.

The IIIT campuses at Srikakulam & Nuzvid called for a solution that would connect the students over Wi-Fi, across the campuses. Pi was trusted with the Solution of conceptualization, designing, supply, installation and commissioning of SDN based cloud controlled campuswide networking, including provisioning of wi-fi for the two IIIT campuses.
