Well, what was the most surprising yet delightful part of the stay here was the warm gesture and hospitality of the owner of the resort, Mr. Deepak Kandpal that made this experience unique. From making sure that everything is perfect at the resort to suggesting the best places around to visit, he is always there to guide and be of help in anyway. He is very new in the hospitality industry, thus, it was very intriguing to know more about his passion for hospitality and how this journey started for him. 1. What inspired you to commence with Lake & Woods Resort?
I have always possessed a strong inclination towards working with people, and the hotel industry with its emphasis on guest satisfaction, grants me the opportunity to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds & cultures. The opportunity to play a role in creating lasting memories for guests is what drives my passion for this industry.
2. What are the challenges that you face?
Since I am not from this industry, everything was just new from me. When I bought Lake & Woods in January 2022, it was in its worst condition and was only semi built at that time. Renovating the whole structure was a big task along with making it look beautiful. But this was just the beginning, apart from Lake & Woods in Bhimtal, we have the Lake House, Dobaati by Lake & Woods. Mount & Lake and other 2 properties are soon to be launched in Nainital & Pangot. 3. Which is your personal favourite?
Well, my personal favourite is Lake & Woods, no hotel can match its vibe, the view, the peace. And also, since it's my first property, I have strong emotions and unconditional love attached with it.
4. A message to the city dwellers as to why should they visit Bhimtal?
Half of Bhimtal is still unexplored, it's the only place in Kumaon which has multiple water activities, air activities like paragliding, hot air balloon, para motoring, etc and there are many more lakes you can visit during your trip to Bhimtal like Naukuchiatal, Sattal, Nal Damyanti Tal, etc.

What made you choose such an offbeat, unconventional, and uncommon career?
From an early age, I've always been captivated by the boundless mysteries of the universe and the limitless possibilities that space exploration offers. This fascination, combined with my background in law, led me to the unconventional and exciting field of space law. I realized that while humanity was venturing into the cosmos, there was a pressing need for legal frameworks and ethical guidelines to ensure the responsible and sustainable use of outer space. Choosing this path allowed me to marry my passion for space with my commitment to the rule of law, creating a career that not only fulfilled my curiosity but also contributed to the greater good of humanity.
Tell us about your career path as a space law scholar.
My experiences at The Fletcher School, Tufts University, and Harvard Law School enhanced my understanding of the legal intricacies relating to space law and space sustainability. Thereafter, I conducted extensive research on contemporary issues of space law and published numerous scholarly articles. Furthermore, I've had the privilege of collaborating with esteemed colleagues and institutions like the International Institute of Space Law (IISL), United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), and Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC), which has allowed me to share my insights with a global audience and contribute to the ongoing development of space law and make meaningful strides in this field.
As someone whose research has delved into space sustainability, could you shed some light on its importance and need for our readers?
Space sustainability is of paramount importance due to the increasing reliance on space-based technologies and activities that have become integral to modern society. Within the past few months, we’ve seen India launching its Chandrayaan 3, SpaceX launching the Falcon Heavy rocket, China launching the world’s first methane-powered rocket, and several countries (including India) signing the Artemis Accords. In this space race, space sustainability is imperative for preserving the space environment for future generations, protecting space assets, avoiding satellite collisions, mitigating space debris, promoting international cooperation, advancing future space exploration, and maintaining the long-term economic viability of space activities.
Space mining is another significant aspect of the space industry that you've researched. What are the potential benefits and legal challenges associated with space mining?
Space mining offers exciting possibilities for resource utilization beyond Earth. The extraction of valuable resources from celestial bodies could support future space missions, enable sustainable space exploration, and even contribute to the economic growth of space-faring nations. It has the potential to revolutionize various industries back on Earth. However, space mining also presents several legal challenges. Determining property rights and ownership of resources in outer space remains a complex issue. Legal frameworks need to strike a balance between encouraging innovation and preventing unchecked exploitation. It is crucial to establish norms that ensure equitable sharing of space resources while safeguarding the space environment from undue harm
Your research explores the transformation from the historical space race mindset to a more collaborative approach in space activities. Could you elaborate further on this transition and its significance in the context of the Artemis Accords?
My research focuses on a pivotal shift in the space exploration landscape, away from the competitive space race mentality that characterized the early days of space exploration and toward a more cooperative and inclusive approach. This shift is exemplified by the Artemis Accords, a set of foundational principles and norms aimed at facilitating international cooperation in lunar exploration. By establishing common principles and guidelines, these accords mitigate potential conflicts, enhance the safety of space activities, and promote the sharing of knowledge and technology among nations.
