Saudi Arabia is eyeing geothermal power as part of its strategic energy plan that also includes massive use of solar energy and wind farms, as per reports. Saudi Energy Minister Khalid Al Falih, speaking at the on-going World Future Energy Summit in the UAE capital, said that his country will generate a total of 10 gigawatts from a combination of solar, wind and geothermal projects to be installed by 2023. There are at least 10 known hot springs in Saudi Arabia.

China will quadruple its new energy vehicle annual output to 2 million by 2020, as per reports. In 2016, China produced 517,000 new energy vehicles, which include battery electric cars, plug-in hybrids, and fuel-cell cars. In terms of charging infrastructure, China built over 100,000 public charging poles in 2016, ie 10 times the figure in 2015.

Money invested in RE is not enough to reach a climate goal of limiting global warming to 2.0 degrees Celsius. A recent IRENA report said the current share of renewable energies in the global energy mix of 18 per cent should double by 2030 to keep global warming under 2.0 degrees.
