FROM THE MASK MAKER SERIES BY NANDAN PURKAYASTHA PEN AND INK ON PAPER, 56 x 38 CM, 2013
Various performing artists inspired Nandan Purkayastha’s Mask Maker series. For the 27-year-old Assam-born artist, masks represent pure fantasy characters, whose thoughts and expressions linger on with audiences. He also randomly includes birds, cane furniture, and other everyday elements among the people making masks to lend form to his stylized black-and-white compositions. Purkayastha is an alumnus of the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Delhi.
