I’m 32 and devoted to my husband and kids. I have heard that if you have sex four to five times a week, you don’t need to do any exercise. Is this true? Sapna Malshe, Mumbai

If sex is healthy and with a legitimate partner, this shows you are high on love and the emotional quotient – which is exceptionally good for your immunity and also shows on your skin and hair. Factually, sex does burn calories but there is no substitute for exercise, because only exercise gives focused address to your different body parts individually. So one can conclude: Maximize your sex, optimize your workouts, but never substitute one for the other.

My 21-year-old son wants to start intermittent fasting. His gym trainer told him to eat dinner and only 16 hours later, eat his next meal. Is that alright? Joy Almeida, Goa

No, that is not alright. First of all, if fasting needs to be done, it needs to be done with eat- ing appropriate food and warm beverages. This type of fasting must include lots of fruits, raw vegetables, dry fruits, nuts, roots, herbs and salads which should be taken in combination with hot soups and herbal teas. The second kind of fasting will be liquid fasting where one must consume coconut water, lime juice (consisting of jaggery, rock salt or amla), vegetable juices (including carrot, beetroot and tomato), squashes made of grated apples and pears; or even orange, pineapple and sweet lime juices if they are sweet, not sour. This is only applicable for summers. During winters, one can have masala milk with cow’s ghee, nutmeg powder, saffron, dates (morning) or blackcurrants (night) and other nuts twice or thrice a day. The third kind of fasting can be resorting to a combination of buttermilk and dry fruits. But I certainly don’t advise long intervals on an empty stomach.
