A Fine Portrait Lens Key Features

- H. S. Billimoria

By focussing all its attention on the APS-C segment of the market, Fuji ilm has been able to offer the largest range of lenses of any manufacturer in this segment. To its already existing 50 mm f/2 and 56 mm f/1.2, there is now the 50 mm f/1.0 lens. The new 50 mm f/1.0 is also weather resistant, which makes it attractive for professionals.

Design & Build Quality

Fuji ilm’s new lens (at a 76 mm equivalent) is ideal for portrait photography. Currently, it is the world’s brightest autofocus optic. The lens is made of metal and both looks and feels solid. The lens measures 103.5 mm (L) x 87 mm (D) and weighs 845 g. The lens supplied to us came without a lens hood.

The lens is constructed with 12 elements in 9 groups that include one aspherical and two ED elements and features a manual focussing ring as well as an aperture ring. The ield of view is 32 degrees and the minimum focussing distance is 70 cms. The aperture range is from f/1-f/16. Nine diaphragm blades combine to offer a smooth bokeh. The lens accepts a 77 mm ilter. There is no built-in image stabilisation.

Ergonomics

Since the lens is on the heavier side, it is important to match it with the right body. We would recommend the -T 4. Matched with the right body, the lens handles well.

The Fuji ilm 50 mm f/1.0 lens proved to be a terri ic performer. The lens autofocuses accurately, and in spite of its large aperture, controls lare admirably. Predictably, the lens is not at its sharpest at f/1.0. Sharpness, both centre and corner, improves dramatically f/2 onwards. A mild cast visible at full aperture disappears once you cross f/2. The lens produces superb bokeh and is ideal for portraiture even in low light situations. An ND ilter can be a handy accompaniment should you want to control the light entering the lens.

The lens carries an MRP of Rs.149,999/
