Realme’s attempts to bring 5G to the masses with this device

Realme has been trying to position at least one phone in every possible segment in the market in both 5G and 4G bands, so that people would ind every possible combination of features within their line-up. We are not sure how effective this strategy is, since we feel that this also adds to the confusion. The Realme 8 5G is the 5G variant of the Realme 8 series, which also includes a 4G only variant.

Design & Build Quality

The Realme 8 5G encapsulates the same design philosophy as its numerous siblings, rendering a mild gradient of light when the phone is moved to a slightly different angle. The device is available in what Realme has of icially christened as Supersonic Blue and Supersonic Black colours. The quad camera module is laid out in a neat rectangular bump at the corner. The device uses a side-mounted ingerprint sensor on the recessed power button. Face unlock is available and both these were quick to unlock the phone, unlike even some high-end devices that take a few seconds to recognise a ingerprint. The phone is thin and light with dimensions of 162.5 x 74.8 x 8.5 mm and weighing 185 g.

Key Features

The device is available in three con igurations: with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal memory, 4GB/128GB and 8GB/128GB. We received the 8GB/128GB variant in Supersonic Blue, and the review is based on this con iguration. The device features Dynamic Ram Expansion technology, which uses the internal storage (ROM) as a virtual RAM, providing a temporary boost to performance when the device demands. According to Realme, DRE can boost 4GB RAM to 5GB and 8GB to 11GB.

The Realme 8 5G is powered by a 7nm Mediatek Dimensity 700 processor, which is Realme’s 5G chip of choice for low-end devices. This processor includes two Arm Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores at 2GHz, which ensures low power consumption, less heat and comparatively better performance. The chipset includes an Arm Mali-G57 MC2 GP with 950MHz clock speed. The phone accepts dual SIM in addition to a MicroSD card. It supports Dual-SIM Dual-Standby with 5G support and is compatible with most mainstream 5G bands. The phone uses a 6.5-inch 90Hz FHD+ display supporting 90Hz refresh rate and up to 180Hz sampling rate. It runs on Android 11 OS with a Realme I 2.0 shell.

Realme has included a quad rear camera module on this device including a 48MP nightscape camera, 48MP main camera, a macro lens and a portrait camera, both of which are predictably of low resolution.

The Realme 8 5G uses a 5000mAh battery, which has become more of a standard now. The supplied 18W charger is not the fastest in Realme’s arsenal, but it tops up the device in about two hours and a half. The device supports Smart 5G Power Saving, which intelligently switches between 4G and 5G instantly for better power saving, depending on your use.

Ergonomics

The Realme 8 5G is a slim and lightweight device that is easy to use. Slightly concave design on the sides makes sure that your ingers do not obstruct sound even when gaming in landscape mode. The interface appeared smooth and reasonably responsive. The
