Beetle Diffuser

Light up those tiny worlds with this simple, yet practical contraption

Macro photography can be quite challenging but the results can be rewarding. Certain parameters, like the choice of the lens’ focal length, controlling the depth of ϐield, framing the subject, correct use of the shutter speed etc. are within our control. What is often not in our control, is the lighting. That’s why we every so often resort to the use of ϐlashguns. But ϐlashguns are considered as point source of light, which result in harsh unwieldy shadows. That’s why we use light modiϐiers to ‘soften’ and ‘control’ the light. There are several such devices available – some good, some not-so-good.

Enter the Beetle Diffuser.

The Beetle Diffuser is a ϐlash-lightmodiϐier designed by Varun H. B., a professional freelance photographer. The entire gadget is made of ϐive components that can be assembled in less than 5 minutes, once you get the hang of it. After use, it can be easily dismantled and placed in the laptop compartment of your gadget bag. The diffuser is lightweight (350 g including the power bank), and, according to the manufacturer, works best with D-SLRs as well as Mirrorless cameras ϐitted with a macro lens of focal length between 60 – 180 mm, with or without the addition of close-up attachments (like the Raynox). The detachable bottom reϐlector helps in illuminating the shadows under the subject, resulting in a soft ϐill-in whenever required.

To help focussing in dark situations, the Beetle Diffuser includes an LED module that is powered by a 5000 mAh rechargeable power bank (included).

The Beetle Diffuser is intentionally quite large – the larger the diffuser, softer the light. However, the user needs to be careful, so as not to disturb live subjects.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating, they say. The proof of the soft quality of light from the Beetle Diffuser can be seen in the superb macro photos displayed here. All the photos, except the product photos are shot by

Dr. Caesar Sengupta, Founder Director, DCP Expeditions and EOS Maestro, Canon India.
