Sharp, Speedy and Reliable Sony FE 70–200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II

Lakshya Chawla takes you through his experience­s of shooting with the newly launched, more advanced Sony FE 70–200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II, a lens that delivers accelerate­d focus, optical brilliance and versatilit­y.

Weddings are full of mesmerisin­g moments and to capture these unforgetta­ble memories, we need that ‘magic lens’. And that is exactly why I was, and continue to be, enamoured with the optically brilliant, nimble, lightweigh­t and yet, rugged, Sony FE 70–200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II. As a wedding photograph­er, I believe in capturing raw emotions in natural light, and Sony has taken me a long way in doing just that, with its innovative cameras and excellent lenses.

Prior to using this particular lens, I had always avoided 70-200mm lenses as they tend to be bulky and heavy, and slowed me down. But Sony changed the game for me. Weighing only a kilogram, Sony’s 70-200mm is extremely light and easy to handle. In fact, I comfortabl­y and regularly use it with my gimbals, for videos as well!

The FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II is one of my preferred lenses from Sony’s G Master lineup. It is an expressive lens with excellent optics. I use it a lot for videos as well, because its focus tracking is absolutely phenomenal. Thanks to it, I can easily capture all those rare and beautiful emotions and moments at a wedding.

The lens is extremely versatile thanks to the independen­t control rings for focus, zoom and aperture, which allow precise manual control if required. Precision is important to me and so is being silent while working. This is achieved by the 70-200mm’s XD Linear Motors and the newly developed aperture drive unit.

What make the lens even more effective is its Nano AR Coating II which reduces ϐlare and ghosting, making it easier for me to retrieve details even in photograph­s shot against bright sunlight. Further, the use of ED and Super ED features in both spherical and aspherical lenses reduce aberration­s and minimise colour bleeding, allowing sharp, expressive shots. The FE 70-200mm lets me capture the details vividly. But where softness is needed, the mellow, creamy bokeh at f/2.8, or the out-of-focus blurs, are simply gorgeous. I thoroughly enjoy this combinatio­n of perfect sharpness, and beautiful blurs.

Furthermor­e, the FE 70-200mm OSS II has highly efϐicient AF, and works perfectly with face tracking. Even if the subject is moving, or I am changing my focal length on the go, the lens never loses focus, even in the dark. This is the cherry on the cake! In wedding photograph­y, this is exactly the lens you need!

We have developed this camera with the aim of being a reliable partner for cinematogr­aphersǡ camera assistants­ǡ colourists­ǡ and other related profession­als. We also developed it by reϐlecting their feedback on VoU (Voice of User) for Venice as much as possible. The Venice 2 6K uses the same sensor as the Veniceǡ which has already been highly ranked in the market and we aim to continue using it. Especially in the content production industryǡ s and colourists gain experience with each camera model regarding the characteri­stics of sensors (sensitivit­yǡ

ǡ colour reproducib­ilityǡ dynamic rangeǡ etc.) and repeat tests to create their own creatives. In the processǡ using the exact same sensor and workϐlow with the latest body and various functions helps the production team to proceed smoothly.

n the other handǡ 8.6K sensor and 6K sensor are used as a reference for developmen­t and designǡ so the colour reproducti­on and characteri­stics of the two models are adjusted to be as identical as possible. Venice 2 is simple and intuitive to use. This was also a goal at the time of Venice developmen­tǡ but this time we have incorporat­ed feedback from Venice users all over the world and created a simpler and more intuitive device. or exampleǡ new features such as changing connector position and typeǡ oom to it and updating monitoring output system are available. It is designed to be easy to use so that users can concentrat­e more on content creations.
