For the uninitiated

The digital imaging sensors used in most cameras are just as sensitive to infrared light as to visible light. Hence camera manufacturers place a specialised filter in front of the sensor to block the infrared part of the incoming light while allowing the visible light to pass. If this was not done, the infrared light would contaminate the images. When you get your camera converted to IR, they remove the original filter and replace it with their custom manufactured IR filter.
