The Game Changer Of Law

DELHI BAR council elections are as keenly fought elections as our state elections. Just like the latter, the bar council elections are also fought after five years. To be a part of the 25 member council is no mean feat when one has to beat hundreds of contestants. But the popular legal eagle Vijay sondhi, senior Partner at luthra&luthra, has done it again this year. he is former honorary secretary and former Vice chairman of The Bar council of delhi (Bcd). with more than 60 percent of the lawyers voting precincts of the capital reporting, sondhi won with the support of seasoned senior counsels along with popular votes of the young and seemingly propitious lawyers. Vijay is known to handle complicated, high profile cases. one such case is what came to be famously known as the BMw case. The firm led by sondhi advised NDTV in its sting operation which exposed the vicious nexus between the state counsel and the defence Attorney in their effort to compromise a key witness in a case involving death of policemen and pedestrians by a BMw car. The case was sensational since all the witnesses had turned hostile and the trial court was compelled to acquit the accused driver of the vehicle. The sting exposed the truth behind the scenes and the high court took suo Motu cognizance and initiated a contempt action and booked the two erring lawyers. The law regarding sting operations was laid down in this case. having such landmark judgments under his belt, sondhi seeks to bring a few required changes in the Bar council of delhi (Bcd). “i would like to seek transparency in the Bcd with the minutes of every meeting being uploaded on the website.i would like to seek technological upgradation in the profession. For example, case status by sMs/email to the litigants as well as the lawyers, developing a mobile application for the same. i would also like to provide a special insurance for lawyers in case of any accidental death,” sondhi says.
