How significant is the new partnership with India? Please share details of the new agreements signed between Alrosa and the 12 Indian companies. How many are new contracts versus renewals? Are there plans to increase that figure in the near future?
India is the largest diamond manufacturing centre, with about 70% of the world’s rough diamonds cut in this country. Indian companies successfully cooperate with Alrosa under long-term supply contracts, as well as in the format of tenders and spot sales. Alrosa signed 12 long-term agreements with Indian companies on the sidelines of the World Diamond Conference in New Delhi. Four agreements are new. It is important to note the serious legislative work that is being done in India to help the diamond sector to develop in the country. But there are still some matters which can be improved. In fact, most part of our European client base are companies owned by Indians. Such companies work not only in Belgium but also in UAE. The location is the choice made by our customer. It means that they see some benefits of registration outside India – for example, access to a financial infrastructure, insurance and logistic services, etc. Being the major diamond polisher in the world, India needs to free its trading regime for swift import/export customs procedures in line with those that are in place in major diamond trading
