Ibe­lieve a re­spon­si­ble man­u­fac­turer is bet­ter than a man­u­fac­turer who has low eth­i­cal stan­dards. Hence De Beers’ en­try is a wise move. How­ever, like syn­the­sised ru­bies have been around since 1880s – al­though com­mer­cial pro­duc­tion did not catch up – syn­the­sised di­a­monds will be a threat to di­a­monds as much as a fake Van Gogh.

My view about the im­pact on the mar­ket is neu­tral. A di­a­mond will be a di­a­mond. How­ever, we do need stronger mar­ket­ing to en­hance, main­tain the de­sire, mys­tique, and charm of the sym­bol of love.
