Legacy jewellery brand PNG Jewellers celebrated the World Environment Day at their adopted village of Shillim in Pune’s Mawal taluka as a part of their Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. This year, they held three programmes that had the participation of over 30 employees from PNG Jewellers alongside 500 local villagers. The aim was to not only improve the quality of life of the villagers but to also sensitise PNG employees towards larger socially relevant issues.

The first programme was a tree plantation drive at Shillim, Ajiwali and Kottamwadi villages, where 1,000 tree saplings such as bamboo and sagwan (teak) were planted. The idea behind this was to beautify the surroundings, but more importantly, provide a means of secondary income to the village as well as tribal people, who can make and sell useful and decorative products made from the wood sourced from these trees. Farmers received education on the Saguna Rice Technique (SRT) of rice cultivation and were provided with tools to execute the same. This technique will help improve yield while reducing the intensity of labour required. Lastly, keeping in mind that the theme of World Environment Day 2018 is ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, a cleanliness drive was conducted throughout the village.

PNG initiated the adoption process in 2016 for the betterment of the lives of the villagers. Over the past two years, PNG Jewellers has conducted successful programmes here in the fields of education, health and sanitation, women empowerment, vocational training and farming. “Working alongside the residents of Shillim village has been a humbling, enriching and eyeopening experience. PNG Jewellers have been blessed with prosperity and we wish to acknowledge this good fortune by spreading goodwill to those less privileged. The response we have received from the locals has been very encouraging and we hope to leave a lasting positive impact on their lives,” said Saurabh Gadgil, chairman and managing director, PNG Jewellers, on the occasion.
