AFI domestic calendar released
The Athletics Federation of India released its 2023 competition calendar and for a change the Federation Cup for seniors — normally conducted in March or early April earlier — will be held in June this time, in Bhubaneswar.
Adille Sumariwalla (in pic), the AFI president, explained that the 2023 domestic calendar has been prepared with an eye on international competitions.
“We have many events in which our athletes can showcase the progress being made. The AFI is confident that Indian athletics will continue to grow in the right direction,” said Sumariwalla. The cross-country Nationals, in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park, will be the AFI’S first competition next year and the junior inter-district Nationals, which come next, will be making a return after three years. The Indian track and field season for men and women opens with the National Open throws meet at the IIS, Bellary in Karnataka, on March 1.
The race walking Team Worlds (Muscat, March 4-5), Asian championships (Pattaya, July 12-16), World championships (Budapest, Aug. 19-27) and Asian Games (Hangzhou, Sept. 23-Oct. 8) are some of next year’s majors.
