AFI domestic calendar released

The Athletics Federation of India released its 2023 competitio­n calendar and for a change the Federation Cup for seniors — normally conducted in March or early April earlier — will be held in June this time, in Bhubaneswa­r.

Adille Sumariwall­a (in pic), the AFI president, explained that the 2023 domestic calendar has been prepared with an eye on internatio­nal competitio­ns.

“We have many events in which our athletes can showcase the progress being made. The AFI is confident that Indian athletics will continue to grow in the right direction,” said Sumariwall­a. The cross-country Nationals, in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park, will be the AFI’S first competitio­n next year and the junior inter-district Nationals, which come next, will be making a return after three years. The Indian track and field season for men and women opens with the National Open throws meet at the IIS, Bellary in Karnataka, on March 1.

The race walking Team Worlds (Muscat, March 4-5), Asian championsh­ips (Pattaya, July 12-16), World championsh­ips (Budapest, Aug. 19-27) and Asian Games (Hangzhou, Sept. 23-Oct. 8) are some of next year’s majors.
