Liverpudlians of rare merit!

Liverpool has started the season in fine fashion, winning six games and drawing two — against fellow titlecontenders Chelsea and Manchester City — in the Premier League at the time of going to press. While a heavily rotated side lost to Chelsea in the League Cup, the only blot in an otherwise smooth season was a lastminute loss in Naples in the Champions League.

Liverpool’s attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Firmino took all the plaudits last year, and rightfully so, but the team’s defence let it down many a time — culminating in the Loris Kariusled horror show against Real Madrid in the Champions League final. The purchase of Alisson Becker from Roma and a fullyfit defensive line, for the most part, has seen Jurgen Klopp turn his side into a defensive powerhouse.

Last season, Liverpool struggled against its fellow ‘Top 6’ sides while having the odd hiccup against the socalled ‘weaker’ teams. This season, it has been effective, if not ruthless, against the smaller teams, while putting up a good fight against the ‘Top 6’ rivals. Here, we take a look at five players who have been at the heart of Liverpool’s superb start.
