Bubba Wallace becomes the first African-american to win NASCAR Cup race since 1963
Bubba Wallace got his firstever NASCAR Cup Series victory when rain stopped the race at Talladega Superspeedway after 117 of a scheduled 1■■ laps.
Wallace took the lead on
Lap 113. A crash brought out a caution three laps later.
During the caution hard rain began to fall and the cars were brought to pit road as the red flag waved.
The organisers tried to dry the track for nearly 45 minutes, but up against sundown and the rain not showing any signs of ceasing, the race was called off.
Wallace became the first African-american to win a race in NASCAR’S premier series since Wendell Scott did it in 1963.
He won in a car owned by NBA legend Michael Jordan and current Cup driver Denny Hamlin. Wallace broke down in tears after he’d returned to his parked No 23 Toyota. The car number was picked for co-owner Jordan, who wore 23 in the NBA.
