Thompson-herah, Warholm named athletes of the year
Jamaican Elaine Thompson-herah and Norway’s Karsten Warholm were crowned World Athletes of the Year after both produced astonishing, ground-breaking performances at the Olympic Games.
Thompson-herah became the first woman to win back-to-back Olympic sprint doubles when she retained her 100m and 200m titles in Tokyo and capped a memorable Games with gold in the 4x100m relay. Her 100m time of 10.61 seconds and her 200m time of 21.53 were both the secondfastest in history.
Warholm, 25, won his award for beating the 29-year-old world record in 400m hurdles and taking Olympic gold in a stellar 2021. His Tokyo time of 45.94 seconds is widely considered one of the greatest Olympic track performances of all time.
Athing Mu, the 19-year-old American who won the women’s ■00m Olympic title, was named the female rising star.
Compatriot Erriyon Knighton, 17, who finished fourth in the men’s 200m final in Tokyo, won the equivalent men’s award.
India’s Anju Bobby George was bestowed with the Woman of the Year Award by World Athletics for grooming talent in the country and for her advocacy of gender equality.
