Mumbai City FC was the Club of the Year at the Sportstar Aces awards after sweeping a double in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2020-21 season.

The Islanders beat ATK Mohun Bagan 2-1 for a maiden ISL Championship, after winning the League Winners’ Shield, in March 2021.

Bimal Parekh, the co-founder of the club, received the award from Baichung Bhutia, while Ranbir Kapoor, the founder of Mumbai City FC, sent a video message.

“I am elated that Sportstar ACES has chosen my club Mumbai City FC as the club of the year. Mumbai City FC has really been a dream for a football fan like me and the realisation of that dream wouldn’t be possible without the coaches, players coaching staff and everybody involved in building the club,” he said.

Starting the season with a 1-0 loss to Northeast United, Mumbai City made a comeback, scoring the most goals last season (35) and having the second-highest number of clean sheets (9).

With 40 points from 20 matches, it won the League on a higher goal difference.

Mumbai City’s success has guided the side to become only the second ISL club to play in the AFC Champions League.

MCFC has been grouped in Group B alongside Al Shabab (Saudi Arabia), Alquwa Al-jawiya (Iraq) and A-jazira (United Arab Emirates). It begins its ACL campaign against Al Shabab on April ■. Talking to Sportstar early this season, Mumbai City FC captain Mourtada Fall had said that their target would be to win everything.
