An award that gives you a lot of confidence
“There are a lot of tournaments coming up. I wish that you will all support me and show me your love,” said P. V. Sindhu.
Indian badminton ace P. V. Sindhu won the Sportswoman of the Year (Racquet Sports) at the 2022 Sportstar Aces Awards in Mumbai. Sindhu established herself as a big-tournament player as she secured a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 despite a lacklustre start to the season. She made up for her loss in the semifinals against Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei with a straight-set win over China’s He Bing Jiao in the bronze medal match. This was her second successive Olympic medal after her silver medal at Rio 2016, earning her the distinction of being the first Indian woman athlete to win two individual Olympic medals. Sindhu also reached the final of the BWF World Tour Finals in the women’s singles event, losing to Korea’s An Seyoung in the final.
With back-to-back events in Europe, the Indian shuttler was unavailable to receive the award in person but sent a video message for the event. “I thank Sportstar for giving me this award. I am really happy to receive it. This kind of award will give you a lot of confidence and boost you up to work harder. Thank you for recognising me and giving me this award. There are a lot of tournaments coming up. I wish that you will all support me and show me your love,” she said.
Sindhu’s father, P. V. Ramana, collected the award on her behalf. She had also won the Sportswoman of the Decade (Racquet Sports) at the 2021 Sportstar Aces Awards.
