A SHOCKER IN SHARJAH
2021: Namibia v Ireland, Sharjah
Namibia first caught the cricket world’s attention when it qualified for the 2003 (ODI) World Cup in neighbouring South Africa. The team failed to win any match, though. It, however, made its maiden T20 World Cup a memorable one, moving into the Super 12, thanks to its sensational eight-wicket win against Ireland. The victory also helped the Namibians qualify for this year’s T20 World Cup in Australia. Seaming all-rounder David Wiese, who earlier played for South Africa, was the star (two for 22 & 28 not out, 14b). It was his unbroken 53-run stand with Gerhard Erasmus (53 not out, 49b) that took Namibia — chasing 126 — home with nine balls remaining.
