The most coveted honour
The World Cup trophy that we know today was introduced at the 1974 tournament in West Germany, and depicts two human figures holding up the Earth. It stands 36.■ centimetres tall and weighs 6.1 kilograms and is made of 1■-karat gold with malachite (a form of ore used to produce copper) bands on the base.
But when the tournament first emerged in 1930, the trophy looked very different from what we are acquainted with today.
In simple terms, the football World Cup trophy has gone through two variants or designs over the years.
This edition of the World Cup is all set to kick off in Qatar on November 20, with 32 teams battling to get their hands on the prized one.
