Two con­tracts have been signed be­tween the IAF and HAL for the LCA Te­jas air­craft. The first was on March 31, 2006 for pro­cure­ment of 20 Ini­tial Op­er­a­tional Clear­ance (IOC) stan­dard air­craft to be com­pleted by De­cem­ber 2011. The sec­ond was signed on De­cem­ber 23, 2010 for 20 Fi­nal Op­er­a­tional Clear­ance (FOC) stan­dard air­craft to be de­liv­ered by 2016. Out of the first order for 20 IOC air­craft (16 fighters and 4 train­ers), nine fighters have been de­liv­ered by HAL till date. The pro­duc­tion of the re­main­ing 11 IOC air­craft (seven fighters and four train­ers) have been taken up at HAL. Pro­duc­tion of 20 FOC air­craft, will be taken up af­ter FOC clear­ance by Aero­nau­ti­cal De­vel­op­ment Agency (ADA) for which cur­rent tar­get is De­cem­ber, 2018.

Apart from the first 40 air­craft (20 IOC & 20 FOC), the DAC has cleared ac­qui­si­tion of 83 Te­jas Mk1A for the IAF for which quo­ta­tion has been sub­mit­ted by HAL. Fur­ther, in order to bol­ster the fighter squadron strength, Govern­ment of In­dia has also planned to man­u­fac­ture fighter air­craft through Strate­gic Part­ner­ship model.
