Actresses like Deepti Naval, Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil took the industry by storm by setting their own version of glamour. Uncompromising artistes, they put forth powerful characters which didn’t require them to be naïve or play nymphets. They were the kinds who didn’t need to look namkeen while stepping out of the samundar or mouth titillating dialogues. Tagged as being ‘arty’, they did add substantial weight to the storylines that they were a part of. Though we’ve lost Smita, Deepti and Shabana continue to act and set a mark. And we have seen this phenomenon of ‘talent transcending gloss’ trickle down to the contemporary lot, with actors like Konkona Sen Sharma, Radhika Apte and Kalki Koechlin delivering impactful acting. While the battle between commercial sell-outs v/s parallel cinema continues we, as an audience, just want to watch some stellar cinema. Long live good cinema!
