Rahul names CBI official, says he helped Mallya escape
THE Congress on Saturday continued to raise questions over the Vijay Mallya controversy, and charged the government with helping the fugitive escape the law.
Party president Rahul Gandhi named a senior CBI official, alleging he helped economic offender Vijay Mallya, as well as PNB fraud-accused Nirav Mo di and Mehu lC ho ksi .“CB IJt. Director, AK Sharma, weakened Mallya’s “Look Out” notice, allowing Mallya to escape. Mr Sharma, a Gujarat cadre officer, is the PM’s blue-eyed-boy in the CBI. The same officer was in charge of Nirav Modi & Mehul Choksi’s escape plans. O oops ... investigation ,” R ah ult wee ted.
The CBI responded saying the charges were “baseless”.
Congress spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill, meanwhile, said the government was not being a protector of public money, but had turned into a travel agency, facilitating “fraud and happy safe flying” for bank loan defaulters. “The manner in which industry of ‘banking scams’ has flourished and outbound traffic of ‘scamsters’ has increased, it is clear BJP is more loyal to ‘ConMan’ than to ‘Common Man’.”
Since the NDA government came to power, 23 fugitives have fled the country, duping public banks of as much as `50,000 crore; but no probes have been launched and no economic offender has been brought back, he added.
