J&K lo­cal body polls to be held in four phases from Oc­to­ber 8

IG­NOR­ING the poll boy­cott an­nounced by two ma­jor po­lit­i­cal par­ties in the State, Jammu & Kash­mir’s State Elec­tion Com­mis­sion on Satur­day de­cided to go ahead with Ur­ban Lo­cal Bod­ies polls and an­nounced that mu­nic­i­pal polls would be held from Oc­to­ber 8 in four phases.

With the an­nounce­ment of the poll sched­ule, the model code of con­duct has kicked in.

“We shall be hold­ing the mu­nic­i­pal elec­tions first and then the pan­chayat elec­tions,” the state’s Chief Elec­toral Of­fi­cer Shaleen Kabra told re­porters here on Satur­day.

He said the polling for four phases will be held on Oc­to­ber 8, 10, 13 and 16 and the no­ti­fi­ca­tions would be is­sued on Septem­ber 18, 20, 22 and 24, re­spec­tively.

Count­ing of votes would be held on Oc­to­ber 20.

The last mu­nic­i­pal elec­tions in J&K were held in Jan­uary 2005 af­ter a gap of 23 years.
