Ac­cord­ing to the re­port of UNDP ti­tled ‘Hi­jras/ Trans­gen­der women in In­dia: HIV, hu­man rights and so­cial ex­clu­sion’, transper­sons face ex­clu­sion from fam­ily and so­ci­ety, lack of pro­tec­tion from vi­o­lence, re­stricted ac­cess to ed­u­ca­tion, health ser­vices and pub­lic spa­ces

The re­port also says they face ex­clu­sion from econ­omy, ex­clu­sion from em­ploy­ment and liveli­hood op­por­tu­ni­ties

De­spite Indian so­ci­ety’s gen­eral cli­mate of ac­cep­tance and tol­er­ance, there ap­pears to be lim­ited pub­lic knowl­edge and un­der­stand­ing of same­sex sex­ual ori­en­ta­tion and peo­ple whose gen­der iden­tity and ex­pres­sion are in­con­gru­ent with their bi­o­log­i­cal sex, the re­port fur­ther notes
