‘STAND BY ME’ by Ben E King
Songs come and go; some fade away, others last a little longer. Very few songs, however, stand the test of time and ever changing tastes. These songs become iconic, legendary and immortal. ‘Stand By Me’ sung by Ben E King (Benjamin Earl King) is certainly one of them.
At the recent royal wedding of Prince Harry with Meghan Markle, the couple chose ‘Stand By Me’ to be performed at the wedding ceremony. Karen Gibson and The Kingdom Choir performed this Ben King number with great feeling and emotion at the event.
Ben King sang the original as early as 1961. The song became instantly popular thanks to its super lyrics and King’s rendition that tugs at the heart. It became a song to remember. For some time in his career, Ben King was the lead singer of The Drifters, a group that specialized in R & B hits. ‘Stand By Me’ was rereleased in 1986 and reached the top of the charts.
Ben King died in 2015 but will be remembered for this song forever. Cover versions of ‘Stand By Me’ have been sung and performed by Julian Lennon, Enrique Iglesias, Julia Westlin and others.
