ABG Ship­yard Ltd (ABG), the flag­ship com­pany of the ABG group was in­cor­po­rated in 1985 as Mag­dalla Ship­yard Pvt Ltd. In 2000, it re­ceived its first or­der from GoI for two in­ter­cep­tor boats and was listed on the in 2005. ABG man­u­fac­tures marine ships such as bulk car­ri­ers, con­tainer ships, sup­ply ves­sels, in­ter­cep­tor ves­sels, tugs, off­shore drilling rigs and off­shore ves­sels. The ship re­pair division pro­vides ser­vices such as jum­bosing, ship con­ver­sion, re­fur­bish­ing, up gra­da­tion, mod­erni­sa­tion, retrofitting and re­build­ing ves­sels. As on 31 March 2011, the com­pany had two ship­yards, lo­cated in Su­rat and Da­hej in Gu­jarat. The com­pany de­liv­ered 16 ves­sels in FY11. Dur­ing the same pe­riod it com­mis­sioned a jetty, a slip dock and heavy duty ship trans­fer sys­tem at its Da­hej yard in Bharuch, Gu­jarat. In May 2011, the com­pany got in­dus­trial li­censes for de­sign and con­struc­tion of de­fence ships from the min­istry of com­merce and in­dus­try. Dur­ing FY11, ABG bagged an or­der from Drilling and Off­shore Pvt Ltd, Sin­ga­pore, for the con­struc­tion of two jack-up rigs and an­other from the In­dian Navy for the con­struc­tion of two cadet train­ing ships, the con­tract for which was signed in June 2011. ABG had an or­der book worth’ 165 bn as of 31 March, 2012. Su­rat: The Com­pany’s ex­ist­ing ship­yard at Su­rat is a state of the art man­u­fac­tur­ing fa­cil­ity with ameni­ties like a “Ship-li” with a li ca­pac­ity of 4500 tons, side trans­fer fa­cil­i­ties, CNC plasma cut­ting ma­chines, Bend­ing rolls, hy­draulic press, Cold shear­ing ma­chines, frame bend­ing ma­chines and steel pro­cess­ing ma­chin­ery. The yard is cer­ti­fied by DNV for ISO 9001:2008. Da­hej: The fa­cil­ity is lo­cated at Da­hej with a to­tal area of ap­prox­i­mately 6,67,000 sq.mts. The new yard is one of the largest and most mod­ern ship­yards in In­dia with a ca­pac­ity to build ships up to about 300 me­ters in length and 1,20,000 DWT, off­shore rigs and plat­forms. The yard is cer­ti­fied by DNV for ISO 9001:2008 and off­shore plat­form con­struc­tion. It is equipped with 28,000 tons heavy duty ship trans­fer sys­tem. 33,000 tons shipli is also un­der erec­tion in this yard. On March 2012, ABG de­liv­ered 32,000 DWT bulk car­rier from Da­hej fa­cil­ity. Goa: Fol­low­ing its ac­qui­si­tion of Western In­dia Ship­yard Ltd in Oc­to­ber 2010, it op­er­ates a ship re­pair, re­fur­bish­ment and dry dock­ing unit in Goa, which is one of the largest ship main­te­nance fa­cil­i­ties in In­dia in the pri­vate sec­tor. The fa­cil­ity is also equipped with a mod­ern state-of-the-art float­ing dry dock that en­ables re­pair­ing of var­i­ous types of ves­sels up to 60,000 DWT. This yard is also undertaking re­fur­bish­ment of off­shore jack-up rigs and is also cer­ti­fied by BQVI for ISO 9001:2008. To fo­cus on oil and gas busi­ness, the Off­shore Division has been cre­ated within ABG Ship­yard. The ob­jec­tive is to get into con­struc­tion of off­shore jack-up drilling rigs and fixed plat­forms. Cur­rently E&P (Ex­plo­ration and Pro­duc­tion Com­pany) oper­at­ing in In­dian wa­ters are sourc­ing these re­quire­ments from for­eign yards. Only one yard in the pri­vate sec­tor in In­dia (which is also in plat­form con­struc­tion busi­ness alone) is into this ac­tiv­ity.

A be­gin­ning has been made by sign­ing a con­tract in 2009 for con­struc­tion of off­shore Jack-up rigs. These high spec­i­fi­ca­tion rigs are be­ing con­structed as per Freide and Gold­man, USA, JU2000A de­sign. Me­g­away, Sin­ga­pore has been en­gaged for undertaking de­tailed engi­neer­ing for these rigs. Drilling pack­ages have been sourced from Na­tional Oil Well, USA . The rigs are be­ing con­structed un­der ABS class and are in com­pli­ance to MODU re­quire­ment. Cur­rently, four rigs with these spec­i­fi­ca­tions are un­der con­struc­tion in the yard. An in­de­pen­dent and a com­pe­tent man­age­ment team is in place. The engi­neer­ing depart­ment headed by a naval ar­chi­tect has been es­tab­lished and is fully equipped with re­quired sowares and hard­wares.

QA/QC and safety de­part­ments headed by se­nior per­sons are re­port­ing to the Vice Pres­i­dent. Rig and plat­form con­struc­tion yard with load bear­ing ca­pac­ity of 40 tons per sq me­ters has been cre­ated.

Spe­cial jigs and fix­tures have been de­vel­oped in-house for fab­ri­ca­tion of jack-up legs which is a spe­cial­ized ac­tiv­ity.
