ABG Shipyard Ltd (ABG), the flagship company of the ABG group was incorporated in 1985 as Magdalla Shipyard Pvt Ltd. In 2000, it received its first order from GoI for two interceptor boats and was listed on the in 2005. ABG manufactures marine ships such as bulk carriers, container ships, supply vessels, interceptor vessels, tugs, offshore drilling rigs and offshore vessels. The ship repair division provides services such as jumbosing, ship conversion, refurbishing, up gradation, modernisation, retrofitting and rebuilding vessels. As on 31 March 2011, the company had two shipyards, located in Surat and Dahej in Gujarat. The company delivered 16 vessels in FY11. During the same period it commissioned a jetty, a slip dock and heavy duty ship transfer system at its Dahej yard in Bharuch, Gujarat. In May 2011, the company got industrial licenses for design and construction of defence ships from the ministry of commerce and industry. During FY11, ABG bagged an order from Drilling and Offshore Pvt Ltd, Singapore, for the construction of two jack-up rigs and another from the Indian Navy for the construction of two cadet training ships, the contract for which was signed in June 2011. ABG had an order book worth’ 165 bn as of 31 March, 2012. Surat: The Company’s existing shipyard at Surat is a state of the art manufacturing facility with amenities like a “Ship-li” with a li capacity of 4500 tons, side transfer facilities, CNC plasma cutting machines, Bending rolls, hydraulic press, Cold shearing machines, frame bending machines and steel processing machinery. The yard is certified by DNV for ISO 9001:2008. Dahej: The facility is located at Dahej with a total area of approximately 6,67,000 sq.mts. The new yard is one of the largest and most modern shipyards in India with a capacity to build ships up to about 300 meters in length and 1,20,000 DWT, offshore rigs and platforms. The yard is certified by DNV for ISO 9001:2008 and offshore platform construction. It is equipped with 28,000 tons heavy duty ship transfer system. 33,000 tons shipli is also under erection in this yard. On March 2012, ABG delivered 32,000 DWT bulk carrier from Dahej facility. Goa: Following its acquisition of Western India Shipyard Ltd in October 2010, it operates a ship repair, refurbishment and dry docking unit in Goa, which is one of the largest ship maintenance facilities in India in the private sector. The facility is also equipped with a modern state-of-the-art floating dry dock that enables repairing of various types of vessels up to 60,000 DWT. This yard is also undertaking refurbishment of offshore jack-up rigs and is also certified by BQVI for ISO 9001:2008. To focus on oil and gas business, the Offshore Division has been created within ABG Shipyard. The objective is to get into construction of offshore jack-up drilling rigs and fixed platforms. Currently E&P (Exploration and Production Company) operating in Indian waters are sourcing these requirements from foreign yards. Only one yard in the private sector in India (which is also in platform construction business alone) is into this activity.
A beginning has been made by signing a contract in 2009 for construction of offshore Jack-up rigs. These high specification rigs are being constructed as per Freide and Goldman, USA, JU2000A design. Megaway, Singapore has been engaged for undertaking detailed engineering for these rigs. Drilling packages have been sourced from National Oil Well, USA . The rigs are being constructed under ABS class and are in compliance to MODU requirement. Currently, four rigs with these specifications are under construction in the yard. An independent and a competent management team is in place. The engineering department headed by a naval architect has been established and is fully equipped with required sowares and hardwares.
QA/QC and safety departments headed by senior persons are reporting to the Vice President. Rig and platform construction yard with load bearing capacity of 40 tons per sq meters has been created.
Special jigs and fixtures have been developed in-house for fabrication of jack-up legs which is a specialized activity.
