RAJYASREE SEN

Tehelka - - BOOKS - SEN

Jakoi, at Delhi’s Assam Bhawan, has excellent authentic Assamese food. The parampara thali comes with dal, two types of vegetables, khar, fish tenga, steamed hilsa, pigeon or duck curry, as much rice as you want and a dessert of puffed rice, cream and honey. The flavours are very delicate and the fish tenga and the steamed hilsa/bhapa ilish are divine, not smothered in ginger, garlic, onion, or tomato. There is a fish delicacy that is cooked and served in a bamboo hollow. They also have these balls of poppyseeds and mustard that you can mash up and eat with your rice.
