Banda rape victim attempts suicide

The dalit girl who was allegedly raped by BSP MLA Purshottam Naresh Dwiwedi in December 2010 in Banda district attempted suicide by consuming a dye on Friday night.

She has been admitted to the Banda district hospital where her condition is reported to be critical.

According to reports, she was being victimised by her own family for the stigma that had been attached

to the family after her rape.

She had a tiff with her father about a month ago after which she left her house in village Shahbaazpu­r in Naraini block and moved to Banda city where she was living in a rented room along with her younger brother. Her security guards also moved to Banda with her.

Sources said that on Friday, the girl had another heated argument with her younger brother and father who had come to visit them and a short while later she consumed the dye.

Officials in the district are keeping a close watch on her condition and are waiting for her to recover enough to be able to make a statement.

Her abduction and rape in December 2010 had caused a major embarrassm­ent to the then Mayawati government and the BSP MLA accused of raping her is still languishin­g in jail.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi had visited her and had also assured her of help in picking up the threads of her life.
