The age of the chivalrous wife

- LAKSHMI KRUPA

Holding the door, paying the bills, buying exotic gifts, and making more money — meet the newage wife who does not leave chivalry to her man; and while she is at it, does a great job! Take the example of Hollywood’s first couple: Angelina clearly calls the shots and Brad Pitt does not seem one bit ‘ emasculated’ but rather enjoys being in this relationship that has managed to hold together over the years. The couple who is all set to tie the knot was recently in the news when Angelina, in her usual style, grandly announced her love for her man on his 48th birthday — she bought him a waterfall!

“Angelina wanted to get him something incredibly special, and because she knows how much he loves architecture, she thought this would be perfect. She hopes this will be a hideaway for the family,” a source told The Dailymail in an interview.

A similar equation can be seen with India’s star power couple Ash and Abhi. Ash being a few years older than her man, pursuing her Hollywood dreams, raking in the moolah while also taking over the reigns while planning a family. Mukesh Ambani too has been happy to let Neeta take centrestage whether it is bashes in honour of cricketers or making speeches at public events. Sociologist Priti Sharma explains, “These are a few happy exceptions to the rule. Rarely are men able to understand what goes through the mind of a woman who makes more money than they do or who isn’t afraid to take charge. But when powerful celebrities set such right examples, it could lead to a healthy trend. These people make for great role models.”
