Bollywood calling Chetan Bhagat

- NATASHA COUTINHO

He’s the writer with the magic touch. Besides being popular with the youth, he now has filmmakers making a beeline to adapt his novels into movies. The promos of Kai Po Che! have been making waves and the movie is based on Chetan’s The 3 Mistakes of My Life . Speaking about the movie the author says, “There are a lot of expectations from Kai Po Che! . If the movie gets a good opening at the box office, it may actually redefine the way Bollywood functions. Though we have a good cast they are newcomers in Bollywood and if they manage to attract the crowd on the basis of promos and the story, since the book has been a bestseller, that would be something new for the industry. Hollywood has had books like Twilight and Harry Potter being made into movies and they featured newcomers, but see how iconic these movies and their actors have become today.”

Chetan admits that he was surprised when he was approached with the idea of adapting The 3 Mistakes of My Life into a movie. “I hadn’t imagined this novel

would be picked up since it’s not really a love story. But each scene has been crafted so well,” says Chetan.

2 States is the next novel all set to be a movie. He says, “2 States is a love story. The movie has an exciting cast with Arjun Kapoor and and Alia Bhatt who are emerging stars and of course it is being made under the Dharma banner.”

He is presently busy penning the screenplay of Salman Khan starrer Kick. “Though it is a remake of the South flick I have been brought in to make it a more contemporary version of the movie.”

Does he now write books keeping in mind that they can be adapted into movies? “My last book What Young India Wants was not something I see being made into a movie so no I don’t write books keeping that factor in mind.”
