Filling ‘ er up!

FILLERS ARE NOW THE RAGE TO PROLONG YOUTHFUL LOOKING SKIN

Facial enhancement is nothing new to the industry — only the processes keep advancing

It was magic at first when the world discovered it; a simple surgery that could rid the visage of all those wrinkles, bring back youth. Face- lifts were the new rage and everyone wanted one — before botox arrived in town. Today, there’s one phenomenon that’s hit home like never before and has been responsible for suddenly pouting lips and ironed out skin: facial fillers, injectable miracle drugs that require no invasive surgery and little recovery time.

“Fillers basically consist of a clear gel, (hyaluronic acid), that makes the skin look young and tight, and are usually injected in the non- expressive lines in the lower half of one’s face. They can be temporary or permanent, ranging from three months to five years. Young actresses like Priyanka Chopra and Kangna Ranaut owe their pout to fillers,” remarks Dr Nishita Sheth, celebrity dermatologist.

Models too seem to embrace the trend; Miss India International Rochelle Rao responds, “Facial enhancement is nothing new to the glamour industry — it’s only the processes that keep advancing. A fine line must be drawn between medical necessity and questionable practices. Compared to the several cases of botched- up botox nose jobs and jaw lines we’ve seen, fillers are definitely a quick fix, painless and a safer way.”

Others though are skeptical of going under the knife for one's looks. “There is nothing like natural beauty. I would never take anything that would risk my health. I’d rather age gracefully,” says actress Kashmira Shah.

If vanity is indeed a woman’s prerogative, cosmetologist Blossom Kocchar points out that it's better for young people not to opt for these treatments though the pressure to look good for professional reasons impels models and actresses to join the bandwagon. “Today there are a plethora of options available. I still believe that it is better to go for natural therapies; they will take time but eventually give you a flawless skin,” she says.
