Left suffers major setback

The Left Front once again witnessed another electoral setback after the panchayat poll results were declared on Monday. Various Left Front- dominated districts saw itself being whitewashe­d by the ruling Trinamul Congress.

With the trending results, the Trinamul Congress dominated the poll results at the gram panchayats securing 69 per cent, where the Left Front managed only 19 per cent. Similarly, till last reports came in, the Left Front just managed 16 per cent of the panchayat samities, losing to the Trinamul Congress who got 76 per cent of the mandate.

Virtually cutting a sorry state, the Left Front managed to win the gram panchayats of two districts of Jalpaiguri and North Dinajpur.

Interestin­gly, in South Dinajpur, Left Front managed only 24 per cent of the gram panchayats losing to the ruling Trinamul Congress which received 76 per cent of the mandate. Similar results

were witnessed at the Left bastions of Burdwan where Left Front got only 43 gram panchayats making it only to 13 per cent where Trinamul Congress won 192 gram panchayats making it 78 per cent. At East Midnapore, the Left Front was white washed winning only 43 gram panchayats, where Trinamul Congress won 158 seats.

Things were worst at West Midnapore where they managed only 24 to Trinamul Congress’ whopping 253 gram panchayats. Among the other worst

performed districts were Bankura with 34 gram panchayats only 14 per cent where Trinamul Congress won 134, Hooghly — 35 gram panchayats with only 16 per cent where as Trinamul got 158, Purulia — 22 gram panchayats with 21 per cent of the vote in contrary to Trinamul making it to 104.
