- AGE CORRESPONDENT

A 26- year- old woman was shot at by motorcycleborne assailants when she resisted their bid to snatch the gold chain of her neighbour. The incident took place in Vivek Vihar area of East Delhi on Monday.

A senior police official said they got a call about the incident at around 8.20 am.

The victim, identified as Komal Malhotra, was taken to a nearby hospital where she was undergoing treatment and her condition was stated to be stable.

“She was standing outside her house when she noticed that two armed assailants riding a bike were trying to snatch the chain of her neighbour Anshu. She threw a broom at the assailants in a bid to save Anshu and succeeded in taking away the gold chain from the robbers which they had snatched,” said the police source.

In the meantime, the pillion rider opened fire at Komal with a pistol from point blank range. She suffered a gun wound on her chest and fell on the road writhing in pain while the assailants fled.

Usha Malhotra, the mother of the victim, heard her scream and rushed to see what had happened to her.

The neighbours rushed the injured victim in their car to Deepak Memorial Hospital where she was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit ( ICU).

“The bullet first hit her little finger hence she escaped major injury. Otherwise the bullet could have damaged her heart. Her finger has been completely damaged,” said a doctor at the hospital.

J. K. Khanna, the maternal uncle of the victim, said that Komal was looking for a job after completing her post graduation in English literature from Delhi University’s Hans Raj College and she was to appear in an interview in Delhi University on Monday.

Komal’s mother Usha Malhotra is a gazetted officer in Delhi University while her father Deepak Malhotra is a retired gazetted officer of Union ministry of health.
