Mumbai cops: No clean chit to Srini’s kin

- MANOJ ANAND

Despite the BCCI probe panel giving a “clean chit” to Mr Gurunath Meiyappan, the Mumbai police hasn’t yet given up its investigation of the IPL spot- fixing and betting scandal. The Mumbai crime branch had probed the IPL betting case in which Chennai Super Kings team principal Gurunath Meiyappan was arrested for allegedly being involved in betting.

“Unless and until we interrogate Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf and the two key bookies, Pawan and Sanjay Chhabra, famous as the “Jaipur brothers”, we cannot give Meiyappan a clean chit. Meiyappan had placed bets on those IPL matches too in which Asad Rauf was the umpire, so the fixing angle has to be probed,” said joint commissioner of police Himanshu Roy on Monday. “Mr Meiyappan was in contact with actor- cum- bookie Vindoo Dara Singh. He placed money on betting through Vindoo who was also in touch with Asad Rauf. So unless we question Rauf we cannot rule out any match- fixing angle involving Meiyappan.

Assam director- general of police Jayanta Narayan Choudhury here on Monday blamed outlawed Ulfa ( I) for launching a planned offensive to make their presence felt in Assam.

After visiting the police constables injured in hospital, Mr Choudhury said, “Ulfa rebels operating under the command of Drishti Rajkhowa was responsible for Sunday’s blast near Paltanbazar police station.”

Pointing out that the group led Drishti Rajkhowa has extorted a lot of money in West Assam by carrying out kidnapping of some private company employees, Mr Choudhury said that they have been trying hard to lob grenade here and there.

Admitting that Ulfa rebels may succeed in few incident of lobbying grenade to cause damage in isolated localities, the DGP however said that Ulfa is no longer a force to reckon with. “We have taken necessary steps to check the recurrence of such incident as well,” he said. Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday said that some security lapses led to grenade attack that left at least 15 people injured in Guwahati.

Mr Gogoi who was in Karbi Anglong told reporters that Paresh Baruah led Ulfa carried out the blast with the help of some outside agencies.

Mr Gogoi said, “These outside agencies and forces do not want development in the state and as such they are mounting pressure on the insurgent outfits active in the state to carry out such blasts.”

In the wake of three grenade attacks in past one week the unified command of security forces also met on Monday and reviewed the prevailing law and order scenario of the state.

The unified command of security forces has decided to launch operations in vulnerable areas to nab the Ulfa and NDFB rebels.
