Since no one wants to step out in the hot sun anymore, evenings in the city are getting fancier as many people are now organising various themes soirees to catch up in holiday season. We speak to party enthusiasts and organisers about what’s keeping Delhi summer evenings cool and happening.

With party themes ranging from Hawaii, Greek gods and goddesses, royal court and marine, city youngsters are living up the vacation time with fun gettogethers. Kritika Sethi, a Delhi University ( DU) student, recently organised a Hawaiithemed bash for her friends to celebrate their last semester results. She says, “Now that college exams are over, we have a lot of time to enjoy. Every weekend instead of going out, we host house parties and to add a special twist to it we do a theme party every time. Recently, I hosted a Hawaiian themed bash and we all wore floral outfits and garlands with floral headgear. My friend organised a card theme party and we got special accessories for that as well.”

Talking about how theme party culture in India is yet to develop, Sanya Batra, third year student of Kamala Nehru College, says, “India does not have a culture of theme summer parties unlike the West. This has started in recent years, but people still resist wearing a costume to a party. In our college dramatics society, we have a ritual of a

throwing party for the passing out students called ‘ The cast party’, where we also declare the new president of the club. This is a theme- based party; year before last our theme was royal court, where I dressed up as a royal queen of nirvana. This May 22, our theme is ‘ world of the dead’, wherein you can be any person who’s dead — vampire, Yamraj, devil... just about anyone. I am going as a sexy devil. I am going to make a tail for myself, wear horns and an all black costume.”

Speaking about birthday theme parties in summer, third year knitwear design department student from NIFT, Sonakshi Vip mentions about her own “old school nerd” birthday party held earlier this year. “I designed a birthday invite which was liked by all my friends. Except one or two, everyone came dressed as a geek student. My friends put in a lot of effort to dress up as per the theme. They wore school skirts, shoes, and even spectacles; one of my friends wore a scribbled shirt from her school to the party. It was so much fun. As for me, I dressed up as a bad teacher at my own party.”

Talking about the culture of theme parties catching up amongst youngsters, Sonakshi adds, “Last year, one of my friends from college held a Greek civilisation house party, which I couldn’t attend, but heard it was a lot of fun. Students dressed up in Grecian attire as well as headgear.”

When it comes to theme parties, guys too like to get creative with fun ideas. Deepak Bawari, a student, recently organised a rockstar- theme house party and asked his friends to dress up like their favourite music icons. Speaking about the theme party, he mentions, “I am a huge rock ‘ n’ roll fan, and even have a small band, so our theme had to be around music. Simple house parties are too common, so adding a theme to it makes it more memorable. We dressed up like our favourite rock artists; I always wanted to try out the Kiss makeup, so this time I tried that with an all black costume and spiked hair. One of my friends got a special Elvis outfit for the night and he looked really cool. A girl came dressed as Lady Gaga and there was someone who was dressed like Marilyn Manson.” Summer theme parties get more exotic as some youngsters like to turn the heat in their favour by taking the celebration to a poolside. Rohan Kichlu, director of food and beverages at The Park, mentions how summers are the busiest time for the team as lot of party enthusiasts book the poolside areas for various theme parties. He says, “We have had some really interesting theme parties this season; a lot of college- goers and young party enthusiasts have organised parties with themes like sand beaches, mermaids, marine wonders, seaside games, etc. Some of them even ask for special theme based beverages and food, that we prepare according to the

themes.”
