Gangpur- Orissa prevail in final

Gangpur- Orissa clinched the 4th Hockey India subjunior boys’ national championsh­ip Division B title in Baroda on Sunday, defeating Delhi 5- 2 in the final.

Sports Authority of India took third place, hammering Gujarat 11- 2.

Gangpur- Orissa opened the scoring in the 13th minute through a Sanjay Xalxo field goal. The team managed to hold on to the lead despite a strong challenge from Delhi.

Pratap Lakra added to the tally, converting a penalty corner in the 37th minute. Delhi reduced the margin in the 44th minute, Mohit Anand sounding the boards ( 1- 2). The match was nicely poised at this juncture, before Gangpur- Orissa decided to go for the kill. Quick strikes from Xalxo and Anand Ekka put them in the driver’s seat.

Delhi struck back through Anand, while Gangpur- Orissa added another in the 66th minute through Biraj Topno, registerin­g a 5- 2 win.

PUNJAB POST BIG WIN In Division A, Punjab and Haryana opened with wins on on Day Two of the tournament in Ranchi. Punjab routed Manipur 7- 1, while Haryana beat Madhya Pradesh 3- 0.

In Pool C, Punjab were stunned by Manipur in the opening half. Ibung Singh had Manipur ahead in the opening half, before Punjab came into their own. Skipper Kawaljit Singh brought home the equaliser in the 32nd minute. Harmeet Singh slammed five, while Kawaljit added another to seal an authoritat­ive win.

In another Pool C game, Jaisingh Dulla’s hat- trick helped Maharashtr­a down UP. Maharashtr­a dominated the proceeding­s taking a 3- 1 lead in the first half. UP fought back making it 2- 3, before Dulla scored at crucial junctures to help the team seal three points.

In Pool D, Mandeep Mor’s hattrick helped Haryana down Madhya Pradesh, while Chandigarh and Mizoram were involved in a 5- 5 draw.
