YSR Congress president Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Monday led a party delegation to Prime Ministerelect Narendra Modi seeking his support for the development of the residuary state of Andhra Pradesh, in a politically significant meeting that came days after his arch rival TDP threatened to pursue cases against him vigorously.
Accompanied by newlyelected MPs belonging to his party, Mr Reddy met Mr Modi at Gujarat Bhavan here for nearly 45 minutes during which he sought the BJP government’s support for the state of Andhra Pradesh and demanded that all promises made by his predecessor, Dr Manmohan Singh, on the floor of the Rajya Sabha be implemented.
“The fact is that he already has 283 MPs. He does not need any of us. Andhra Pradesh needs him. We want our Prime Minister to be proactive. YSRCP was never averse to him. We expect a great deal of help from him for Andhra Pradesh,” the YSR Congress chief told reporters after the meeting.
The soon- to- be Opposition Leader in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly said the YSR Congress would provide the Narendra Modi- led government “issue- based” support though he underlined that the fact the BJP is not dependent on anyone to run the government.
Sources said Mr Reddy was closeted with Mr Modi for nearly 30 minutes separately, after which he introduced his MPs to the PMelect and submitted a memorandum. MDMK chief Vaiko also met Mr Modi and asked him to ensure the interests of ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka and demanded that the BJP government take steps for inter- linking of peninsular rivers.
