She Cannes — and does!
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan dazzled like a true diva and rocked the Cannes red carpet in a golden gown and red hot lips. Critics, eat your words!
There’s a reason why they call her the face of Indian beauty — for better or for worse, her each movement today is a headline tomorrow — and that’s exactly why Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has always been the “golden girl” of the Indian film industry. This year as she made her first appearance at the Cannes red carpet, not just her fans but even critics were left spellbound by her beauty. Even her dearest hubby Abhishek Bachchan, who was sleep deprived and jet- lagged, couldn’t take his eyes off her and tweeted, “Almost 52hrs without sleep! Eyes shutting… and the Mrs. Shows up looking like this!! Ok.. Eyes wide open now!”
Back home, fashion experts can’t stop raving about how Aishwarya has rocked her first Cannes appearance this year.
Designer Nachiket Barve, who has dressed Aishwarya on and off, mentions that when it comes to her, “less is always more.” He says, “She is so beautiful that she does not need to add on much. On the red carpet when her beauty is the focal point of her look, she shines like a diva. I loved her dipped in gold look and international styling, her rose- kissed make- up and soft curls played a major role in accentuating her beauty. Even though she has been criticised for some of her Cannes appearances earlier, this year there’s no doubt she’s looking gorgeous. The tail gown was an apt choice for the red carpet as this formal occasion requires undertones of drama too.”
Designer Anand Bhushan too agrees that Ash is back with a bang and those who tried to pull her down over her past appearances will be eating their words now. He mentions, “She’s lost a lot of weight, and we got a little glimpse of that when she appeared in the Cavalli jacket a day before. However, the true unveiling was on the red carpet with that stunning gold gown. She is definitely one of India’s yummiest mummies right now. I’m delighted with her look this year. She kept it simple with that splash of red, which made a fantastic contrast with the gold gown. L’Oreal has done a brilliant job with her hair and make- up and even her nails looked spectacular. It’s a complete transformation from last year.”
Designer Poonam Bhagat, self- admittedly not into fish tail, bling or Cavalli, is also stunned by Ash’s look this year. She says, “I must admit her look is flawless. Perfect hair and make- up and no accessories except the ring and bangle, though the latter could have been excluded, but the ring is spot on. She could lose a few more pounds though! To sum up, she looks like a beautiful mermaid.”
Designer Urvashi Kaur recalls her past Cannes appearances and feels that while Ash tends to over- style at times, this year she has got it right. Urvashi says, “She’s been criticised in the past but thankfully this year she is looking quite stunning. She’s looking so natural and beautiful. It also depends a lot on the personality of the celebrity. For someone like Sonam Kapoor, for example, even a little over- styling works fantastically. Aishwarya on the other hand doesn’t have that fashion diva quality. Sometimes she’s gone wrong with certain choices of colour and fabric but her physicality is demure and her personality soft, that’s why this sort of classic, natural look suits her brilliantly. The corset is enhancing the waistline and collar- bone, and is making her look truly stunning.”
We find a different viewpoint in designer Anupama Dayal, who feels that the dress lacked the dignity and elegance that the actress needs at this age. She points out, “Aishwarya is a senior actress and a very beautiful woman, and the dress does not do justice to her personality. It’s too tight on the abdomen and too shiny in an ostentatious way. She could have opted for something more elegant without so much bling, that would have taken care of those little bulges and yet would have shown off her beauty. I love the lipstick, hair and the attitude though, she looks like she’s having fun, but I do wish her outfit had a little more elegance to it,” she concludes.
